The Academy

Preparatory Division (ages 9-14)

The Preparatory Division is designed for the intermediate student with the introduction of pre-pointe and pointe for female students.

Students will enjoy the addition of new dance disciplines such as jazz, modern, flamenco, and conditioning. Many classes are taught to live piano accompaniment, a crucial element in developing the child’s understanding of the relationship between music and movement.

Students should expect to spend a minimum of 2 years in each level.

Performing with Kansas City Ballet

Academy students are eligible to audition for Kansas City Ballet productions where roles and ages vary. Casting of students into KCB Company productions is at the sole discretion of the KCB Artistic Director and not a guarantee.

End of School Year Performances

Students in Level 2 and up participate in an annual Spring Performance at the Kauffman Center. This performance is ticketed and open to the public, and all students are encouraged to attend.

KCBS also hosts two annual watch weeks for families, one in the fall and one in the spring (see the school calendar for dates).

Get Moving

Any student who wishes to join our Preparatory program must take a placement class to determine his or her skill level.
