Sanctuary

Music: Sanctuary (adaptation and combination of Motherless Child, I Want Jesus to Walk with Me and Swing Low) by Maria Thompson Corley

My inspiration came from collaborating with Maria Corley, the composer. Maria reworked two of her pieces, Motherless Child and Swing Low, to create the combination for this ballet. When listening, “your heart almost breaks, so you feel like a motherless child, and you want the chariot to swing low and carry you home”.
We have all had times of heartbreak. I wanted to create a place of refuge, safety, and unity within this pas de deux, which is why it’s titled Sanctuary.
