Choreography: Nacho Duato
Music: Maria del Mar Bonet
Five arrangements of traditional songs by Majorcan singer-songwriter María del Mar Bonet inspired Duato to create Jardí Tancat (Catalonian for “Closed Garden”). The songs are based on the rhythmic tasks, rituals, and recreations of daily Catalan life. Duato portrays the peasants’ connection to the earth and to each other in the powerful movements of three couples who are occupied with the sowing, planting and threshing of the barren Catalonian land. The piece, Duato’s first choreography, won first prize at the 1983 International Choreographic Workshop in Cologne, Germany.
