The exploration and creation of art can be viewed as a never-ending challenge, an ongoing dialogue between one’s self and the outside world. The pull or expectation to please others, the desire to honor one’s inner life, the beauty of discovery and connection, the struggles in accepting, surrendering to, and living with the ups and downs of the artist’s journey. How much of ourselves do we expose to the world? How do we practice vulnerability and welcome others in to our experience? There is both freedom and tension in creating art, and I find myself in a constant state of holding opposites.
“I am not in competition even just with myself and ask for no grace, divine or otherwise, for my efforts, strive after no atonement, no victory to accelerate my ruin.” – Poetry by Ulf Goebel, “Fault Lines” from Fugitive Causes
