We are reaching the end of Women’s History Month and shining the spotlight on KCB Rehearsal Director, Kristi Capps. “On any given day, I am teaching company class, leading rehearsals by either staging, coaching, or assisting choreographers in company repertoire, and creating the daily rehearsal schedule for the dancers.”
She says many women in her life inspire her daily. However, her previous director at Cincinnati Ballet, Victoria Morgan, greatly influenced Kristi during her performance career. “She joined the company with little experience as an Artistic Director in 1997 and went on to become one of the longest running female Artistic Directors in the U.S. so far. She had to prove herself repeatedly to gain the respect of the board, dancers, and community making tough and sometimes unfavored artistic decisions in order to build Cincinnati Ballet into the respected company it is today."
“I watched her give her life to the company, sacrificing having a family of her own and giving hours upon hours of her “off time” in order to keep the company stable. Now at 72, she continues to find ways to keep dance and movement accessible to others and share her passion within the dance world.”
Kristi's words of wisdom for young women looking to follow a similar career path, “Understand that you are passing on a gift and knowledge to the next generation. You are not looking in the mirror anymore. You are the one helping those that are facing the mirror to find their true selves and potential as well as hopefully continuing to inspire their passion along the way.”

New Moves choreographer Caroline Dahm's new work, "delicate", is eclectic and gestural, exploring themes of vulnerability and how one builds walls to protect themselves.
On creating this work with KCB dancers, Dahm says, "It's about more than the movement, it's about their human experience as well."

Haley Kostas' new work, "Scarecrow" is inspired by the idea of an alter ego, and set to music which Kostas describes as soulful, ominous, and swanky.
"The idea is that you put on this hat, and you become whatever you want, and it gives you the grit that you need to be able to achieve something you thought you couldn't." Says Kostas about her work for New Moves. It's about "escaping into that to see if you could just completely become someone else."

Yesterday, Kansas City Ballet Music Coordinator and Pianist Irina Brouhard was made an American citizen!🇺🇸
Irina Brouhard was born in the southern Ural Mountains of Central Russia. She began playing the piano at the age of 7. She attended Magnitogorsk College of Music graduating Suma Cum Laude and was only one of only 20 accepted at Novosibirsk Conservatory of Music. She has had an impressive career following, and we are honored to have her as part of the Kansas City Ballet family!
Congratulations, Irina!
