Take a look inside Cinderella rehearsals with Cameron Thomas!
Cameron describes how the music carries the story of Cinderella through a wide range of emotions. “Prokofiev’s score highlights the romance, comedy, and drama of the story while allowing for some virtuosic dancing throughout."
"So far, interpreting the score is the most challenging part [of rehearsals]. Prokofiev’s music does not neatly fit into eight bar phrases and waltzes like other ballet scores. We have relied on a combination of complex counts, intuition, and some musical cues. It is a challenge but well worth it- I adore the music in Cinderella. The coda waltz of the ball scene, the pas de deux, season variations, prince variation, and many others are standouts for me.”
Cameron says audiences who come see Cinderella should “Expect it all! Beautiful ballet set to a rich, complex Prokofiev score, lots of laughs, and a classic romance."

Take a look inside Cinderella rehearsals with Naomi Tanioka!
“Cinderella is a story that shows how life can be unfair sometimes, and good things don’t always happen to good people, but what’s important is what you make of your situation. Cinderella’s kind, true nature is what brings her triumph.”
“Even though her situation is far from ideal, and her life seems miserable from an outside view, she does not see her life that way. So when she is having to sweep the floor and do all the chores, she is not sad or dreadful about them. My challenge is to find the joy that Cinderella discovers in these moments.”
Naomi says her advice to young dancers is “to not take anything for granted, and to enjoy every moment that you get to dance and perform. There will be so many moments in this career that are not what you hoped for, and you might be discouraged and feel down on yourself. But try to stay motivated, and find the light in these hard times like Cinderella would, and keep the light within you.”
